Pretty When She Dies – Review & Giveaway

There is no better way to kick off October and the re-opening of Bloody Bookish than by hosting a stop on Rhiannon Frater’s Pretty When She Kills Blog Tour!

Prepare yourselves! There is a lot of stellar information in this blog post including a review, 2 giveaways and information on how you can listen to the book.

Rhiannon Frater has been making a name for herself in the horror, supernatural urban fantasy and zombie genres, and after reading Pretty When She Dies, I can see why.

The first book in the horror trilogy, Pretty When She Dies is the story of Amaliya Vezorak, who wakes up buried in the forest, a newly-created vampire. We follow her as she tries to navigate this new life without a rulebook or instructions to guide her.

Luckily, Amaliya is a strong, street-smart, sass-talking woman. Okay, so maybe she stumbles at the beginning (it was only the blood-madness that made her drink through an entire university frat house, right?), but eventually she finds her footing (in stilettos, no less), and lucky for her, because her whip-smart attitude is what keeps her alive (or undead, as it were).

In fact, all of the female characters in the book are strong in their own ways, which is great to see. Sure, some bloody tears are cried along the way, but, as Amaliya says “It was freaking hard to be a poor-ass Texan vampire”.

Although I found the first section of the book to be a bit slow, I can also see how it benefits the book. After all, with no one to guide her (most certainly not her sadistic creator, who does it more as a torturous sport than necessity), Amaliya must fend for herself. She has no idea what the rules are, and can’t even rely upon movie cliches to guide her as she was so terrified of vampires growing up that she didn’t watch any of them anyway. So the pacing seems to mirror Amaliya’s own first footsteps into a world she really knows nothing about. But she certainly doesn’t rest on her laurels, using those streetsmarts to bring her from her forest grave, through Texas to Austin, where her destiny awaits.

This book has what every good vampire book should have: blood, death, sex, rock ‘n roll and of course, a little love and humor thrown into the mix, the latter from her cousin and Grandmama, who I really loved, and who play a pivotal role in the book. Their questions about whether Dracula was real and later, their loyalty, made me glad that Rhiannon didn’t just use them as throw-away characters.

As mentioned above, love comes in the from of Cian, the oldest and most powerful vampire in Austin, a 300-year-old vampire with an Irish brogue who first kidnaps Amaliya before becoming her tutor in the ways of their kind. His engagement to bubbly ‘Barbie’ Samantha and the ever-present bitchy assistant Roberto are obstacles that stand in their way, and offer some great twists and turns throughout the story as the group battle their way through Texas.

Definitely an original, Pretty When She Dies is a fantastic primer to the trilogy. Funny, smart, sassy, sexy – and with a strong lead female character who I imagine will only grow into a more fascinating character in future books.

Speaking of which, the second book in the trilogy, Pretty When She Kills, is next on my to-read pile, and will be reviewed here. The third, Pretty When She Destroys, will be out next year.

Amaliya Vezorak never believed in happy endings…

When Amaliya harnessed her necromancer powers to defeat her greatest enemy, she believed she had finally found a happy ending with Cian, her lover and the master of Austin. That happiness is short-lived when the vampire ruling over San Antonio attempts a takeover of Austin in order to capture Amaliya and use her power for his own devices.

To make matters worse, Samantha, Cian’s ex-fiancée, is seeing ghosts, the untested vampire hunters of Austin are running scared as a supernatural war looms, a mysterious man is hunting Amaliya with the help of her one time lover, Pete, and Rachon’, the Summoner’s favorite progeny, appears to be out for revenge.

When Amaliya’s grandmother, a powerful medium, experiences terrible visions that reveal there is another necromancer vampire and she is crying out for help, Amaliya realizes happy endings do not come easily…
